Attorneys Involved In Dissolution of Marriage Cases

Actuarial and Consulting Services For Attorneys In Dissolution of Marriage Cases

For over twenty years, Goldstein and Associates has been extensively involved in providing actuarial assistance to attorneys regarding pension divisions in dissolution of marriage cases.  The services we provide include the following:

Pension Valuation

In virtually all cases, pension benefits, whether vested on nonvested, are treated as property to be divided between the spouses in a divorce case.  We specialize in determining the value of accrued pension rights in dissolution of marriage cases.  We have performed approximately 500 such valuations each year over the past 20 years.  As actuaries, we are professionally trained to perform such calculations, interpret plan provisions, and use appropriate mortality tables.

Qualified Domestic Relations Orders

Scales of JusticeIn recent years, our firm has become increasingly involved in assisting attorneys with the design, drafting, and review of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders (QDRO's).  Considerable care must be exercised in the drafting of QDRO's to avoid any potential misunderstanding among the parties and to insure that the order meets all the requirements of the law.  Actuarial involvement is frequently useful to insure that the order properly reflects the intent of the parties and meets all legal requirements.

In Illinois, our firm is also extensively involved in assisting attorneys with making the necessary pension calculations for Qualified Illinois Domestic Relation Orders (QILDRO's) and with drafting such orders.

Expert Testimony

The two actuaries of the firm, Sandor Goldstein and Carl Smedinghoff are qualified and available to provide expert testimony on all aspects of pension valuations.  Sandor Goldstein has testified in court on several hundred occasions over the past twenty years.  Based on our professional qualifications and considerable pension experience, we are able to testify on all aspects of pension divisions.

Speaking at Seminars and Writing Articles

Sandor Goldstein has spoken frequently as seminars for attorneys on the subject of valuation of pension benefits.  These seminars have included ones sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Mr. Goldstein has also written a number of articles for publications of the legal profession on the subject of valuation of pension benefits.
